I have participated in and written about other protests in California, Washington, D.C., and New York before – everything from peaceful, song filled processions to late-night anti-war demonstrations in front of the White House when police got carried away and began ramming their motorcycles into participants. However, when I lived in Dakar from 2004 to 2005 as a University student, I only witnessed student protests at UCAD (the national university - Université Cheikh Anta Diop).

What I walked into on Friday truly impressed me. A rainbow of all corners of society gathered in front of La Poste (the post office of the Medina neighborhood), excitedly chatting, taking photos with each other, and encouraging onlookers and passers-by to sign the petition to oust President Wade.

As thousands of protesters marched through the halted traffic, those who happened to stumble upon the event eagerly approached closer. Men walking the streets selling sunglasses and credit for cell phone cards stopped by, gazing, some to chat politics with unemployed men watching from the sidewalk. Women in flowing gowns vending street food like peanuts chanted along. A 12 year old boy, chewing a kola stick watched from the median, boldly voicing his thoughts to me that the protesters were only concerned with immediate worries like the cost of food and not seeing the bigger picture of the infrastructure improvements that Wade has overseen.

This engaged perspective of the locals impressed me, coming from the U.S. where it is more common for pedestrians not involved in the protest to only remark on how traffic is being blocked or how “radical” the activists dress. Most of all, they generally ignore it all and continue shopping.

The protest blossomed and continuously grew as the march passed side streets and alleys spilling over with youth. The unified chants, “Na Dem!” (in Wolof, one of the main local languages) for the president to step down, the camaraderie of marchers jumping together in song, and the adherence they paid to the leading protest organizers in red caps was truly unique.

Indeed, some of the largest recent protests in the U.S. – respectively focusing on immigrant rights, the economy, and ending the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq include the unified elements of Friday’s protest. But protesters in the U.S. oftentimes find themselves amidst loosely connected activist groups with their own chants and own agendas marching in their own blocks– from faith-based groups, to labor unions, to anarchists, and all in between.

I realize the biggest difference possibly stands to be the fact that this nation has had the same president for over 9 years. The thought of his term extending to 2017, if he wins elections in 2012, has truly unified an eclectic country with extremely diverse needs. I have yet to learn how the mobilization of Bennoo will spark a long-term movement and how this will compare to the SOPI coalition for change of 2000.

Joe Sciarrillo

African Advocacy Network
